Margaret Melanson and her friend had a pact; if either of them won the lottery, they would split the prize. Their pact was tested when Melanson bought a 100X The Cash instant game card from the Massachusetts Lottery, and she passed the test with flying colors.
When she scratched the ticket it revealed a prize of $1 million. There was not a moment of hesitation; she claimed the prize in a single payment, which came to less than half a million after taxes, and promptly split it with her friend.
She plans to take a trip to Alaska, then go back to her normal life as a shopkeeper in Danvers. Her children and grandchildren will receive portions of her prize.
