A man from Cranbrook volunteered a couple of hours manning a Christmas Kettle for the Salvation Army at the Canadian Tire outlet.  After his shift, he went to the mall and bought a Lotto 6/49 ticket and promptly forgot about it, but not before jokingly telling the clerk that he may make a donation there. Douglas Lowes, who works at a mine in Sparwood, uses his spare time to volunteer for charity work.

This weekend, he was surprised when a colleague sent him an SMS saying that someone from Cranbrook had won the lottery jackpot.  This prompted him to check his tickets to find that the 6/49 quick pick he bought had won a $4.9 million jackpot.

Since then he has decided to stop working for a living.  He says he may continue doing volunteer work on a part-time basis.  He says he will take his wife and two sons on a Christmas vacation to Cuba.  He also wants to donate to charity and has identified three organizations he wants to help.

He says he hopes the money is enough to help lots of people in the community.
