Maryland Claims First Ever Powerball Jackpot

That $108.8 Million Powerball jackpot has been claimed. It has gone to a couple from Abingdon, Maryland.

Apparently the couple are undecided if to go public about their win, but so far have chosen to remain anonymous whilst they consider options. Maryland is one of the few states in the USA where lottery winners are allowed to stay anonymous.

Carole Everett, the Lottery Communications Director for Powerball, says she hopes the winners will choose to go public and she is hoping to hear back soon.

Whilst it’s always good publicity for the lottery company, and we all love reading about lottery winners, it’s often not in the best interests of the winners to go public where they have the choice. In fact it’s often better that lottery winners stay anonymous.

Powerball launched in Maryland back in January 2010 so it has taken a year and 8 months to find their first Powerball jackpot winner. Maryland has however had some big jackpot wins from Mega Millions.

The winning Powerball numbers for 7th September 2011 were 3, 5, 18, 27 and 54, with a Powerball number of 13. the lucky winning couple bought their ticket from Abingdon Wine World in Constant Friendship Blvd.
