Thomas Harwood, 72, was thanking his late mother for his £1 Million win on Friday.

The retired miner and grandfather of four hit the EuroMillions Millionaire Raffle prize – after he had been to visit his mother’s grave:

I went to visit my mum and dad’s graves on Friday and I took some flowers as it would have been mum’s birthday. I’m sure she’s got something to do with this.

Thomas had a close call with mouth cancer just three years ago, so with this added windfall he’s decided he’s actually quite a lucky person after all. The most he had ever won before on the lottery was just £10.

He has plans buy himself a permanent caravan by Redcar beach. And also to help out his granddaughter with fees for university.
