It’s normal to donate a little something when the church collection plate goes round.

But the 55 year old pastor of a struggling Baltimore church was surprised to find a $3 scratch card amongst the donations on Sunday.

He might initially have wondered if this was a slightly miguided gesture from a parishioner.

But the ticket had already been scratched, revealing the donation to actually be the top prize of $30,000. Maryland lottery HQ confirmed the ticket was indeed a winner.

The generous donor remains a mystery, and indeed the pastor confirm he does not know who donated the winning scratch card. But the church welcomes the money and will use some of it towards operating costs. But the pastor is also very keen to give some back to those in need.

We have a lot of people in need. Hopefully, we can give some back, especially since this is the way we received it.

Amusingly, with a twinkle in his eye, the pastor said he also intended to spend $5 of the donation on the big Mega Millions rollover.
