A father and daughter lottery playing team has just won big money in New York. Frank Rivera of Suffern, and his daughter Laura Rivera-Sachs have posted a $15.8 million lottery win.
Rivera, who is a retired corrections officer, says he plays the lottery every week. Often he plays the New York Lottery, but sometimes tries the Mega Millions game too. When he first checked the ticket, it looked like he was a big winner, but he found that hard to believe at first. So he did a few more checks, but the result was the same.
When Rivera called up his daughter, she thought it was a joke. But now that they have claimed their prize, they are all smiles. Father and daughter opted to receive their prizes as a single lump sum payment. After taxes each of them will take home $3.8 million.
Rivera says the best thing about the win is never having to worry about finances again. He says he will use his share to help family and to buy a new car. His daughter says she will take a family vacation and save the rest.
