There were lots of celebration in Spain as the El Gordo Lottery once again spread lots of Christmas cheer. Although the lottery is known for the biggest prize pot, it spreads the pot prize very widely; there are 1,000 winners of the big one and 24 million winners in all.
As tradition dictates that winners visit the ticket agencies they bought their entries from for parties called fiestas, the festivities spread even wider.
The Christmas El Gordo draw is a national institution in Spain. It’s one of the most important times of the year, and the whole country gets involved. Small villages have been known to share tickets, win and see lives changed. There really isn’t anything quite like it.
