When two weeks had passed without anyone claiming a $22.6 million jackpot for the New Zealand Lottery’s Big Wednesday September 25 draw, officials took the initiative to find the winner.  And as it turns out, the winner is just like most lottery players – putting bets in, but not really believing he would ever win a jackpot.

Lottery officials tracked the ticket sale to Pak’ n Save Riccarton, where it was bought, and asked the store staff to help identify the lucky winner for the September 25 draw, for help in tracking down the winner.  This led them to the doors of a man in Christchurch.

Incredibly the man refused to believe them at first, saying his work mates have informed him that the jackpot had already been won.  He never once thought he was the winner.  Officials later convinced him to check on his tickets, and that is when realization hit.

Now the man is contemplating what he will do with all that money, which is the third largest Big Wednesday jackpot ever won.
