A young single mother who has had her share of trying times recently has just claimed her share of a huge $564 million Powerball jackpot. Marie Holmes turned up at the North Carolina lottery offices where she received a ceremonial check for $188 million.
Ms. Holmes has indicated the wants to receive the prize as a lump sum. That would cut her prize down to $127 million which works out to about $87.9 million net of taxes. Flanked by an attorney and a financial adviser when she received her prize, she said she was still planning what to do with all the money. But initial plans include helping her family, travel, education and giving to churches and organizations which help cerebral palsy victims.
