Retired FDNY Man Wins $5 Million

A former firefighter who had to retire due to lung ailments suffered as a result of his work in the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center has won a huge $5 million jackpot.

Carmelo Mercado only wanted to buy one ticket, but decided to buy another $20 “Cash X 100” ticket on a whim.  It was the second ticket which won.  He is set to receive a $3.3 million single lump sum payment, net of taxes.

Mercado says 911 caused him to be a risk taker.  This time it paid off big time.
