Unclaimed Lottery Prizes Total $50 Million

You’d think that people who buy lottery tickets in the hope of landing a huge jackpot would take their winning chances more seriously.  But that is not the case, as many people who buck odds of 1 in 175,223,510 to play the Powerball lottery routinely throw winnings in the trash bin.

While there are very few cases of unclaimed jackpots in the millions, there are quite a lot of smaller prizes that have been unclaimed.  And the numbers can be mind boggling.  In Wisconsin alone, unclaimed prizes from 1997 have so far exceeded $50 million in total, and totals  $2-4 million per year.

While people lose their chance to fund further lottery bets from unclaimed small winnings, they do not go to waste.  The lottery regularly turns these over to its property tax relief fund.
