Desperate times call for desperate measures. In what is seen as a reflection of the hard times people are going through, the Arizona Lottery reported a hefty 7% increase in lottery ticket sales for fiscal year 2013. This makes it the sixth year in a row that lottery ticket sales records have been broken.
Given the astronomical odds of winning the lottery, very few people have won the really big jackpots. This has not stopped people from forking out $692.9 million, for a chance at the big money, egged on perhaps by the slogan that says you can’t win if you don’t play.
All that money is not lost however, as the state will get $176.5 million from state lotto sales in 2013, and the total state revenue since 1981 is nearly $3 billion.
