Spaniards Hope Christmas Brings Lottery Luck

Spain is one European country rich in Christian, mainly Roman Catholic tradition.  Christmas season is often associated here with the nativity scene, a sort of diorama depicting the moment of the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ.  There are also numerous Christmas bazaars, and families generally look forward to celebrating the great day together.  And then there is also excitement brought by the yearly Spanish Christmas lottery draw.

Also known as ‘El Gordo’, the Spanish Christmas lottery is one of the biggest and oldest lotteries in the world.  Its origins can be traced back to 1812, and the prize pool in last year’s draw exceeded 2 billion euros.  The long queues at lottery outlets just before the December draw is another indication of the coming of the Christmas season.
